Beetlemania!!
Meet the fab beetles of Catalina Island
No, this month’s gallery is not about rock music, long hair and bell-bottom pants. It’s about the order Coleoptera-the most diverse groups of insects. Welcome to the world of bettles!

Of the estimated 1 million known species of insects, more than 350,000 are beetles. Scientists think there may be up to 10 million species once the ongoing survey of the Earth’s biodiversity is completed. From the gigantic Hercules beetle – a full 6 inches in length to the tiny Flower Beetle (which at 1/6 of an inch could almost pass through the eye of a needle), beetles are truly the jewels of the insect world. They are colorful, phenomenally well adapated to survive, revered by ancient civilizations, and inspiring in their beauty.

Come explore the diversity and beauty of Catalina’s fantastic beetles. click here >>

A Tale of Two Archipelagos Part II
Galapagos plants, animals and us

In this, Part II of our exploration of the Galapagos Islands, we’ll meet some very interesting plants and animals and draw parallels with Catalina’s species. Some of these contrasts may surprise you! Even though Catalina and the Galapagos are thousands of miles apart, occasionally, our stories run parallel. Members of the Conservancy Board and Staff traveled to the Galapagos last May to learn lessons on Galapagos and to share our own. A few “Galapagoans” have also traveled far and wide and arrived on Catalina, although not be design, but by accident. Ther stories are contained in this photo gallery.

So,come and discover some of the Galapagos resident denizens in this conculsion to “A Tale of Two Archipelagos.”click here >>
